Treaties were historically about sharing, peace and friendship – not about giving up land

George McMartin’s “Big Canoe Trip” – a CBC radio broadcast about the finding of a diary of a treaty commissioner working on Treaty 9 in Ontario.  The writings in his diary basically tell us that what Indigenous Peoples have been saying all along about the treaties – they were never about giving up land, and were to continue as long as the grass grows and water flows – is what his understanding was.
